\

The science of human growth and development tells us that high-quality health care and adequate nutrition before and after birth are fundamental to promoting healthy child development. From birth through the early childhood years, providing access to affordable health services (including mental health care) is one of the most effective ways for reducing infant and early childhood health problems and developmental delays. Essential health services include developmental screening at 9, 18, and 24 months and follow-up early intervention services when delays are detected.

Parents and guardians, pediatric health providers, and early care and education providers are partners in assuring that babies and young children receive that preventive and routine health care they need for healthy brain development and school readiness.

Within the First Things First Early Childhood Development and Health system, healthy births, developmental screenings, early intervention services, immunizations, and doctor visits for preventive and sick care are priorities for all Arizona kids.

Please contact Judy Walruff, PhD, Senior Policy Specialist, for further information about early health and early health screenings for children.
